Reduced transparency of either the atmosphere or the water in a water body, caused by absorption and scattering of light by suspended solid or liquid particles. Turbidity is one of the standards routinely tested for by water utility companies, and high turbidity can easily and cheaply be treated by the addition of certain harmless chemicals. High atmospheric turbidity cannot be treated and in certain circumstances might cause delays in air traffic.
