surface layer of soil which is usually more fertile and better structured than underlying layers. The surface layer may vary in depth depending on soil-forming factors, including parent material, location and slope, but generally is not greater than about 300 mm in depth from the natural surface. The definition of suitable topsoil should be based on soil chemical and physical properties.
